The 0.5.0 "Return of the Ancients" update brings a completely reworked passive skill tree, two new Ascendancy classes (Martial Artist and Ritualist), and the Runes of Aldur league mechanic. For new and returning players, choosing the right starter build is the difference between a smooth progression to endgame and hitting a wall at yellow maps. We tested six builds through the entire campaign and into early red maps on budget gear, evaluating clear speed, boss damage, survivability, and gearing cost. Here are the results.

1. Martial Artist Monk (New Ascendancy — Best All-Rounder)
The new Martial Artist Ascendancy is arguably the strongest league starter in 0.5.0. It focuses on combo-based melee attacks with powerful finishers that scale well with very little investment. The passive tree changes in 0.5.0 added several new claw and staff clusters that benefit this build directly. Budget: Almost nothing — the build functions on white weapons through act 8. Playstyle: High mobility, active combat with dodge rolls between combo finishers. Endgame ceiling: Capable of T16 maps on a 50-100 chaos budget. Best for: Players who enjoy fast-paced melee combat and want to try the new Ascendancy.
2. Witch Minion (Most Beginner-Friendly)
The classic minion build remains one of the safest and most forgiving starters in PoE2. Skeletons, zombies, and spectres do the work while you focus on positioning and mechanics. In 0.5.0, the minion passive tree was reorganized with better pathing, making it even easier to reach key minion nodes early. The Runes of Aldur league mechanic also drops minion-specific runes that provide substantial power without requiring trade. Budget: Near-zero. Minion builds need almost no gear to clear the campaign. Playstyle: Summon and forget — let your army clear screens. Endgame ceiling: Solid up to T14-T16 maps with modest gear (50 chaos total). Best for: Absolute beginners, players who prefer relaxed gameplay, or SSF.
3. Warrior Stun (Budget Mapping Monster)
The Stun Warrior relies on heavy hits to stun-lock enemies, then uses "Stun Finisher" support gems for massive damage multipliers against stunned targets. The 0.5.0 passive tree added new "Impact" nodes that improve stun buildup, making this build more consistent early on. Budget: Very cheap — a two-handed mace with high base damage is all you need. Playstyle: Slam, stun, finish. Slower but extremely satisfying. Endgame ceiling: Strong in mapping but struggles against bosses that are immune or resistant to stun. Best for: Players who want a straightforward, tanky mapping character.
4. Deadeye Lightning Arrow (Fastest Mapper)
Lightning Arrow Deadeye is the speed king of PoE2 0.5.0. The build fires arrows that chain lightning between packs, clearing screens in a single shot. The Deadeye Ascendancy provides extra projectiles, chain, and tailwind for movement speed. In 0.5.0, Lightning Arrow received a buff to its damage effectiveness against rares and uniques. Budget: Moderate — you need a good bow to feel strong in yellow maps. Budget option: The Storm Cloud unique bow carries through white maps for 1 chaos. Playstyle: Fast, glass-cannon ranged. One screen clear, but you need to dodge. Endgame ceiling: S-tier mapper, but requires currency investment for bossing. Best for: Experienced players who want to blast maps fast on a league start.
5. Stormweaver (Best SSF / League Starter)
The Stormweaver elementalist archetype uses Arc or Storm Brand to clear maps with minimal gear requirements. The 0.5.0 patch improved Arc's chaining behavior, making it more reliable in dense content. Stormweaver also benefits from the new elemental mastery clusters on the passive tree. Budget: Extremely low — the build works with self-found wands and shields through the entire campaign. Playstyle: Stand back, cast Arc, watch everything die. Simple and effective. Endgame ceiling: Capable of all endgame content with investment. Best for: SSF players, first-time PoE2 players, or anyone who wants a caster starter.
6. Pathfinder Poison (Scales Well into Late Game)
The Pathfinder poison build uses Toxic Rain or Cobra Lash to stack poison damage over time. The 0.5.0 changes to poison mechanics — specifically the new "Proliferating Toxins" cluster on the passive tree — make poison builds more consistent for mapping. Budget: Low to start, scales with investment. A Quill Rain unique bow costs 1-2 chaos and carries the build. Playstyle: Apply poisons, dodge, let damage over time do the work. Endgame ceiling: Excellent. Poison builds scale very well with gear and can handle all endgame content including pinnacle bosses. Best for: Players who want a starter that transitions smoothly into a late-game bosser without rerolling.
Which Build Should You Pick?
Here is a quick summary based on your priorities:
- Easiest to play: Witch Minion — your army does everything
- Fastest mapper: Deadeye Lightning Arrow — screen-wide clears
- Best all-rounder: Martial Artist Monk — new, strong, fun
- Cheapest to gear: Stormweaver — self-found viable
- Best bosser potential: Pathfinder Poison — scales with investment
- Tankiest: Warrior Stun — stun-lock everything
Every build above was tested on the 0.5.0 passive tree with the Runes of Aldur league mechanic active. None require unique items to function — only the Deadeye and Pathfinder benefit significantly from their recommended budget uniques. Whichever you choose, remember to pair your build with optimized graphics settings using our PoE2 Config Generator for the smoothest mapping experience.
