PoE2 supports three control schemes, each with distinct advantages. The right choice depends on your class, content type, and personal preference. Here is an honest comparison with keybind recommendations for 0.5.0.
Controls sorted by player preference: Our Config Generator sets up your production_Config.ini for optimal input latency regardless of control scheme.
WASD + Mouse (Most Popular for 0.5.0)
WASD movement gives you independent movement and aiming — you can dodge roll diagonally while firing behind you. Essential for boss fights and hardcore. Best keybinds:
- Dodge Roll → Space or Side Mouse Button. Must be instantly accessible without leaving movement keys.
- Flask 1-5 → 1-5 or Shift+1-5. Keep flaks on muscle-memory rows.
- Skill 1-4 → Q, E, R, T. Right next to WASD for zero-reach casting.
- Aura/Offering → A or D. Toggle buffs without moving hands.
- Enable "Keep Sprinting While Moving" in Options → Interface → Gameplay. Lets you release sprint key while character keeps running, allowing independent dodge direction.
- Disable "Gem Cutting & Equipment Restrictions" under Options → Game to experiment freely.
Mouse Click (Classic ARPG)
Mouse movement is what PoE2 inherited from PoE1. It is simpler for relaxed play but less precise for 0.5.0 boss mechanics:
- Best for: Minion builds (Witch), RF-adjacent playstyles, and general mapping where precise positioning matters less.
- Worst for: Melee, hardcore, and the new Martial Artist ascendancy which benefits from positional aiming.
- Set Attack in Place → Shift for stutter-step kiting. Essential for ranged builds.
- Increase Mouse Polling Rate to 1000 Hz in your mouse software for smoother cursor tracking.
Controller
Controller support in PoE2 0.5.0 is significantly improved with the new Build Planner and price check system:
- Best for: Steam Deck / ROG Ally, long couch sessions, 0.5.0 league start grinding.
- Drawbacks: Slower inventory management, slower looting, harder to target specific mobs in dense packs. The new loot filter (see our Loot Filter Guide) helps.
- Steam Deck specific: Use DX12 (required for XeSS), XeSS Balanced upscale, maximize HUD scale for readability.
- Controller Binds: Bind dodge roll to R1/RB or L1/LB. Flask to face buttons (A/B/X/Y). Skill to triggers + bumpers.
Interface Settings That Matter
- Show Clock → ON — track play sessions for loot filter efficiency.
- Show Monster Resistance Icons → ON — crucial for 0.5.0 endgame.
- Map Landscape Transparency → LOW or OFF — improves visibility in fortress maps.
- Hide Remove-Only Stash Tabs → ON — declutters your stash UI.
- Minimap Rotation → OFF (locked orientation) unless you prefer rotating.
