GGG shipped patch 0.5.5 on September 4, 2026 (1 PM PDT), and with it the Forbidden Rites event league — the last major content drop before the full 1.0 release on December 11. The event brings a major Trial of Chaos overhaul, a new set of Soul Cores, eight event challenges with exclusive rewards, and — as always with a new league — a fresh wave of performance questions. Here's everything that matters, including which settings to revisit before you start an event character.
Starting an event character? Regenerate your config first with our PoE2 Config Generator — the recommendations are re-validated for 0.5.5. And if the event launch brings stutter back, our Stuttering Fix Guide still applies.
What Is Forbidden Rites?
Forbidden Rites is a free event league running alongside the regular 0.5.5 patch. You create a fresh character in the event realm, progress through 8 new challenges, and earn exclusive cosmetic rewards along the way. Structurally it's similar to previous race-style events, but the twist this time is the content you encounter: the event leans heavily into the reworked Trial of Chaos, so most of your event playtime routes through its new mechanics.
The Trial of Chaos Overhaul
The headline change of 0.5.5. Trial of Chaos has been substantially restructured, and from a performance standpoint this matters more than any item list:
- Redesigned encounter flow — trials chain differently, with new modifier combinations and a reworked sacrifice/rite structure
- New and reworked boss encounters — expect heavier VFX overlap in late trials than the old version
- Event-specific rewards tied to completing the reworked trials
Older trial zones were among the worst offenders for particle-heavy frame drops. If GGG carried that VFX density into the new encounters — and the launch-week streams suggest they did — the settings below matter.
New Items: Soul Cores
0.5.5 adds two families of Soul Cores (item class: Augment) plus new map fragments and tablets:
- Jiquani's Soul Cores — Automation, Malediction, Targeting, Rallying, Radiance, Severing, Rippling, Quaking, Munitions, Snares, Abundance, Squalls, Thundering
- Atziri's Soul Cores — Devotion, Vitality, Alacrity, Inoculation
- New Atlas content — Sacred Bloom (Map Fragment), new Expedition Tablets
Practical note for loot: if you run a strict loot filter, update it for the new Soul Core classes before the event. An outdated filter will either hide valuable new cores or spam your screen — both ruin an event start. Our Loot Filter Guide covers the major filters and how to update them.
Settings to Revisit Before the Event
1. Boss VFX handling
The 0.5.0b hotfix introduced boss VFX preloading, which fixed most boss-arena stutter. The reworked Trial of Chaos adds new effect sets the preloader now has to handle. If you still get a hitch entering trials, keep Texture Streaming on High but lower StreamingCachePoolSize to 1024 — this remains the single most effective anti-stutter config change (details in the 0.5.0 Performance Guide).
2. Dynamic Culling — still OFF
0.5.5's patch notes don't mention any change to Dynamic Culling. The long-standing recommendation stands: Settings → Graphics → Dynamic Culling → OFF. Hiding off-screen enemies to gain a few FPS causes invisible one-shot deaths in dense trial encounters — a bad trade in an event where death costs progress.
3. Shader cache hygiene
New encounters + new VFX means a fresh wave of shader compilation. On first days, expect one-time hitches the first time you see each new effect. On Nvidia, verify that Shader Cache Size is set to at least 10 GB in the Control Panel; on AMD, make sure Surface Format Optimization stays default and the driver shader cache is on "Optimise for performance". After a few trial runs the hitches disappear.
4. Don't crank GI for the new zones
Global Illumination remains the most expensive single setting. The temptation with a shiny new league is to push it back up — don't. GI on Low reclaims 3–4 ms of frame time that the new trial VFX will happily consume.
Event Launch Performance: What We Expected vs. What Happened
Past league launches (0.5.0 included) followed a predictable pattern: server-side congestion in the first 48–72 hours, manifesting as "stutter-walking" near monster packs even at high FPS. This is a server tick issue, not your PC — no config change fixes it. If you experience it during the first event weekend, wait it out; it resolves as the launch surge fades. Our stuttering guide's fix #11 covers the network-side workarounds (gateway switching, lockstep vs predictive).
Should You Play the Event?
If you're preparing for the December full release, Forbidden Rites is worth the time: it's the only chance to learn the reworked Trial of Chaos before 1.0, the challenges reward cosmetics, and event characters typically transition into fresh league starts well. If you only care about performance testing, the event is actually a great benchmark — the reworked trials are the new worst-case scenario for FPS, so if your config holds 60+ there, it holds everywhere.
Quick Checklist Before You Start
- Regenerate your
production_Config.iniwith the Config Generator - Dynamic Culling → OFF
- Global Illumination → Low
- Update your loot filter for new Soul Core classes
- Nvidia: Shader Cache ≥ 10 GB · AMD: shader cache enabled
- Expect server-side stutter for the first weekend — it's not your PC
Looking ahead: the 1.0 full release hits December 11 with the new Duelist class. Now is a good time to make sure your rig is ready.
